To enter and win a writing or poetry contest you must be a good writer or have an exceptional idea or concept. Of course, another way is to become a skillful (or more skillful) writer. Studying the winning works of others can be a great help. Preparing to win a contest will go a long way toward being able to earn a living as a writer. There is no substitute for learning your craft and then putting it into practice (practice, practice and more practice).
