Millennium Information "The When, Where and Why of the New Millennium" Check Your Computer's Time SettingBegan When: The first instant of January 1st, 2001 Where: Royal Greenwich Observatory, Cambridge, England at the Prime Meridian Why: Now, that is what made for some fascinating reading. With all the hype centering on the Millennium and the change being discussed as the year 2000 (not to be confused with the Y2K bug that some computers and programs suffer from) and not reported correctly as 2001, this page is dedicated to the correct date that the world officially entered the new Millennium. All the references are included below. Like it or not the people who set the clocks and calendars for the globe got together and agreeded on the exact official date for the change. The why and the accuracy of our current system of dates is contained in the included links listed below. It is truly a fascinating story. If we look for a reason that the millennium date, being reported or quoted, was off, where do we start? Looking at centuries old newspaper and history texts we find that part of the answer lies with our perception of decades. All of us have seen references to the 20's, 30's, 60's, 70's and 90's. Popular media, advertising and even history texts contain information listed about decades listed by the two year icon and nearly all of them represent the first year of a decade as the year ending in zero. So the "70's" start in 1970 and end in 1979. Comfortable and easy to understand, but, chronologically incorrect. Like it or not, the first year recorded in our current calendar system was the year "0001" and not the year "0000". To have ten years in that first decade we must end in the year "0010" and the first year of the next decade was "0011". Moving forward from the end of that first decade nearly 2,000 years, we arrive in the "Twentieth Century". Somehow, we find decades reported now as starting in the year zero, such as "1990". Correctly the 1990's decade started January 1st 1991 and will end on the last stroke of midnight December 31st, 2000. Who was the first to mislabel a decade, and when? Sorry, but that error seems lost in the mists of time. Popular medi reports the "last year" of the century incorrectly. The media needed to correct the misconception that 1999 was the last year of the 200th decade or the twentyth century. Below you will find references to the actual start of the "Twenty First Century". Links: U.S. News Online - As The Century Turns Today's Date and Time Questions? ... Comments... Please
