Control Given To:
Registration Contacts' Positions

Registrant:

The registrant is the "OWNER" of the domain name. This position carries "NO POWER" to change or modify anything about the domain. The registrant is NOT notified of changes to the domain.

Administrative Contact:

Administrative Contact has complete control to make changes to any part of the domain. The Technical Contact is notified of the changes and can veto them. InterNIC Notifications of Domain Changes should be read and fully understood before being returned as Acknowledged. No response is, after a time, taken as acknowledgement.

Technical Contact:

Technical Contact has complete control to make changes to any part of the domain. The Administrative Contact is notified of the changes and can veto them. InterNIC Notifications of Domain Changes should be read and fully understood before being returned as Acknowledged. No response is, after a time, taken as acknowledgement.

Billing Contact:

Billing Contact is notified by email and currently by letter of the money owed to Network Solutions for Domain Name Registration and Renewal. The Billing Contact has no direct control of a Domain Name. By default (not paying an invoice) the billing contact can disable a domain. Non payment will result in the Domain Name being returned to the open market.

Locking Function:

When chosen, domain locking, puts the domain names in Registrar Lock, meaning the names are secure not only at the site, but also at the registry, the very top level of domain administration. Domain Name Locking provides an additional layer of protection from inadvertent changes to domain's name servers, which could make them inaccessible. HRC Domains and some others offer this feature

Safest Way To Set Up:

List the true owner as the Registrant. The Administration Contact should be the owner or a trusted employee or contractor. The e-mail for the Admin spot should be paid for and controlled by the owner and checked daily by a knowledgeable person. Technical Contact should be the Webmaster for the site. The Billing Contact should be the owner or a trusted and knowledgeable staff member or contractor. It should NEVER be the ISP. The ISP only needs the Technical spot or permission during set-up and in reality not even then if the site is registered correctly from the begining. Register with an ICANN accredited registrar that offers "Locking". During a transfer between hosting companies the Technical may need to revert to the new ISP for a short period to speed the transfer. Tranfered correctly, a site never needs to be down.
